Winifred
Winifred Wells was the first woman to cross Australia from Perth in the West coast to Sydney in the East Coast and back. A journey of 5504 miles done on a Bullet 350. She departed December 26th 1950 and returned Jan 16th 1951. Royal Enfield sent her a trophy that was presented to her at the Claremont Speedway in Perth where she rode a lap of honor on her bullet. To quote an account of the time "The roads through which she is now travelling are merely bush tracks, through sandy, waterless wastes, and her very life depends on the reliability of her machine". A 2004 documentary of the Australian Broadcasting corporation found her alive and well (page 14) in Tasmania and happy that her amazing feat is still remembered.
