The Czar's Enfields
Nicholas II ordered these military Royal Enfields alright. But did he ever take delivery? Look at the date of the article: March 8th 1917 (click on it to enlarge). He was forced to abdicate exactly a week later. Apparently he did take delivery (figuratively speaking at least): a short article in The Motorcycle of March 7th indicates that the first part of the order was delivered (although The Scottish Motorcyclist on the same date less reassuringly says the first part of the order "has been completed"). Whatever the precise delivery date, the fact is Russia had been in turmoil for a while and I am sure the Czar never got to see one of these machines. I wonder if there are any left?
