At the Royal Yacht Squadron

Unfortunately Google Street View took the picture of the place when there was a festival with tents.

  1. The current picture is taken from a slightly different angle, what a difference out in the moorings a very different type of yacht out in the roads, also the new breakwater only built in the past few years. All that said, the Isle of Wight is as close as 1930’s riding and traffic as you can get in England,

  2. The big German liner might be the former SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, which was surrendered in 1919, served as a troopship returning U.S. soldiers from Europe and eventually entered British and Canadian service as a passenger ship. She went in for a refit and conversion to oil burning not long after this 1920 photo was printed. Perhaps that refit came as a result of the reported "inefficient" machinery.
