My wife and I encountered one of these at an eerily empty old hotel in Lisbon, in 1976. The place was enormous but empty, except, it seemed, for us. It felt haunted. We didn't recognize what the heater was, at first, but as the water wouldn't get cold, it dawned on me that action was required. I could imagine the wooden floors and fittings of the old place going up in flames, but it was summer and we badly needed showers. So I took the risk of turning on the gas and striking a match. WUMPF! It was very effective.
