Sholay is the biggest hit in the history of Bollywood, being the highest grossing film of all time in Indian cinema, having grossed around US$160 million. In 1999 BBC India declared it the "Film of the Millennium". A Royal Enfield features prominently in the movie.
Update: Or so I thought. Many places claim that the motorcycle is a Royal Enfield. In fact, the actors reenacted part of the scene recently on a Royal Enfield, however, following the comment by Mr. Shiv, I researched the issue further. The video is not clear enough to see, but in this picture, it appears that the motorcycle is NOT a Royal Enfield.

Is it really an RE? I posted this same video to the Enfield forums, and someone pointed out that this bike has a girder fork -- meaning it pre-dates Indian independence (1947), the 1955 government order, and the days when REs became associated with India.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mr. Shiv! I updated the post.
ReplyDeleteThe bike depicted in Sholay is a BSA, and not a RE. However, RE Bullet has immortalized in film 'ANDAAZ'( Zindagi Ek Safar Suhana) and Raj Kapoor's 'Do Jaasoos"
ReplyDeleteThanks rk! I will investigate.
ReplyDeleteIndian films are pretty cool, but it's hard for a Westerner to understand why this particular film is the highest-grossing of all time...
