Setting free the bears
Setting Free the Bears is the first novel by American author John Irving, published in 1968 by Random House. You can read a bit about the plot in this contemporary New York Times review. That motorcycle there is a 700cc Royal Enfield (presumably an Interceptor).

GE to finance Ural motorcycles
Readers of this blog are probably familiar with Ural motorcycles. The history of Ural motorcycles has a bit of a parallel with Royal Enfield. The Soviet Union started producing motorcycles based on the BMW R71 after a secret deal part of the Ribbentrop-Molotov agreement prior to World War II. Then communism essentially "froze" the design of these motorcycles at a 1950/60's stage, and so one can buy today a brand new bike of that vintage. Pretty much like Royal Enfield. Now GE will give financial backing to dealers selling Urals. This allows the dealers to get GE financing to stock their showrooms. Perhaps Royal Enfield could strike a similar deal? The reasons they give for financing Ural apply to Royal Enfield as well...

A tale of a 1930's Royal Enfield motor
Via Barnstormers New Zealand. I'm not entirely sure about what it is said about this being a special 1930 motor. The sloper engines were used in several years in the 1930's. But it is true that they did not last long. This dovetails with the photo discussed recently in royalenfields.com
Note: Barnstormers' site is temporarily down. Here is a cached version of the article. Hat tip David Blasco.

One cool Enfield
It is uncommon to see Royal Enfields in Cool Hunting. But designer Max Hazan's machine made it.

The Royal Enfield/Indian saga adds a new twist
Readers of this blog know, but between 1955-60 Royal Enfield motorcycles were sold in the US with the brand name Indian, after the Springfield, MA manufacturer closed its plant and stopped domestic production. After 1960 other bikes were sold under the Indian name but with the death of Floyd Clymer in 1970, the Indian brand became dormant. There were a couple of attempts of revival that were largely unsuccessful. Now the brand has been bought by Polaris Industries, makers of the Victory line of motorcycles. This attempt at revival appears serious. An entirely new engine has been developed and the bikes are announced as coming soon. Now Polaris is mulling a new alliance with Eicher, Royal Enfield's parent company to produce motorcycles. They already have a joint venture to produce light vehicles, and in a further twist of the Enfield/Indian saga, they are operating it in the old Royal Enfield factory in Jaipur. If the new venture takes place, Indian motorcycles are going to be sold in India, produced in the old Royal Enfield factory! It would be an immense boost to Royal Enfield if they could use the vast network of Polaris dealerships to sell in the US. I hope this also improves the attitude of the Indian Owners Club in the US, which explicitly excludes the Enfield made Indians. Both Enfield and Indian started producing bikes in 1901.

6hp vs gate
We've covered this picture before. Here is the full story. As we know, nothing was impossible for the 6hp sidecar model, even busting through a gate. October 30th 1913 in The Motor Cycle.

More on Clymer
I imagine the news probably caused excitement at the Royal Enfield factory in Westwood (the only one left by then). A ray of hope that in the end would not work. From Cycle News, January 21st 1969.

Indian TT
We mentioned that a Royal Enfield won the first Indian TT in 1913. Here is the ad. Pity they did not bother to include any details of the race!
