No doubt the readership would have understood what was meant but the article never defines what sort of "sportsman" he was. All it says is that he was a member of both "M.C." and "A.C." and was fond of games of all sorts, which he played fairly. It says he was "the frankest of sportsmen." Frankly, I wonder?
